Ontario Speed Limiter

Here’s an update on the speed limiter from Truck News. My question here is that trucks coming in from the US – will the carrier be responsible for having their trucks limited mechanically to 105 km/h? And another thought – you have one truck carrying a heavy load in the slow lane. A truck with a lighter load pulls out to pass but is limited to 105km/h. Now you have both lanes occupied for the amount of time it takes to pass. I can see some very frustrated drivers both in cars and trucks ………….

Ontario speed limiter law another step closer to reality

TORONTO, Ont. — The Ontario Legislature has approved Bill 41, the controversial law that would require all trucks operating in Ontario to be mechanically limited to 105 km/h.

All three parties supported the Bill, but the Opposition PC and NDP parties have requested public hearings at the committee stage. With the ruling Liberals holding a majority government, however, it’s unlikely the Bill will be defeated at this stage.

The Bill will go to a Legislative committee for consideration and then will return to the Legislature for final passage before the Legislature adjourns for the summer, the Ontario Trucking Association reports.

The province will then hash out the details of the new law over the summer and prepare to implement it in 2009, the OTA says. A period of education enforcement will likely follow before penalties are introduced in the fall of 2009.
