THE DROUGHT IS OVER!! MAHONEY WINS AT SOUTH BUXTON

Warren Mahoney finally got the monkey off his back by taking his 10th career Southern Ontario Sprints feature win in convincing fashion on Saturday night. Mahoney’s last SOS feature win came nearly 5 years ago at the Merrittville Speedway on August 16, 2003, and he had recorded 8 runner-up finishes since that win, before climbing back up to the top step of the podium at South Buxton.

Derek Jonathan and Dick Mahoney led the field to the green flag to start the 7th feature of the 2008 SOS season, with Jonathan taking the lead coming out of the 2nd turn. Jonathan’s lead would be short-lived however, as the driver from Lewiston, NY slipped high off the track in turns 1 and 2 after completing the first lap and flipped. Fortunately the #81 suffered only minor damage in the incident, which brought an end to what had been a good week for the Jonathan team as they had taken a heat race win earlier in the evening, and won their first ever sprint car feature last Sunday in weekly action at the Humberstone Speedway.

With one lap in the books, Dick Mahoney assumed the lead for the restart and took off when the green flag dropped, looking for his 2nd feature win at South Buxton. Behind Mahoney’s #79, the action was heating up as Ryan Hunsinger was holding onto the 2nd position with a pack of hungry drivers on his tail. 2nd place points man Warren Mahoney and points leader Glenn Styres had started side-by-side in row #4, with 3rd place Keith Dempster directly in front of them. While Styres and Dempster were unable to make much headway, Mahoney darted through the field, making his way into 2nd and chasing down his father Dick before another red flag stopped the race with 7 laps completed, as Kyle Patrick was upside down in turn 3. Patrick was working on Craig Downie for the 8th position as he entered turn 3 on the low side, but slid up into Downie’s #71, caught a wheel, and barrell-rolled. Patrick emerged from his damaged car uninjured, but the crew has more work to do once again in what has turned into a season of terrible luck for the #33k team.

The race went back green with Warren right on his father’s tail, and it was only a matter of time until Warren got by the #79. “The Wiley One” made his move around his father to take the lead during the 9th lap, and set sail out front. While the action was going on out front, Glenn Styres found his groove and started to move forward, making his way into 2nd around Dick in turn 1, but Warren was ahead by 2.5 seconds by that point and slicing through lapped traffic with relative ease. Styres was fast, but could not put a dent in Warren’s lead, and the race went green the rest of the way, with Warren crossing the finish line out front, followed by Styres, Dick Mahoney holding off a determined Adam West for 3rd while West settled for 4th, and Bob Crawford in 5th.

Due to rain the race scheduled for June 28 at South Buxton Raceway was cancelled. So the double header weekend was down to one race at Humberstone Speedway on June 29 for Round 4 of the series.

RBM Carriers very own Dick Mahoney continues to show his racing ability and having fun away from the day to day business of transportation. Dick was leading the pack after the restart on lap 2, but alas his brakes were failing and he could no longer hold them at bay.

The full report is here courtesy of Southern Ontario Sprints

STYERS SOARS TO SOS VICTORY AT HUMBERSTONE

by tommy Gudge

After breaking a two year winless drought in Southern Ontario Sprints competition two weeks ago at Brighton Speedway, Glenn Styres began a new streak on Sunday night at Humberstone Speedway by winning his second SOS feature in a row. Styres, one of three drivers with a chance to become the first ever three-time champion in SOS history this season, also vaulted unofficially from fifth in the points standings into the lead.

Dick Mahoney and Bob Crawford brought the field to the green flag to start the 20 lap feature, with Crawford winning the drag race into turn one and emerging with the early lead. Crawford’s lead would be short-lived, however, as he spun in turns three and four during lap two to bring out the first caution of the evening. The rest of the field was able to slip by Crawford’s #10, with the exception of Keith Dempster, who made slight contact with the inside wall in turn four and stopped. Dempster, who had entered the evening as championship leader with a slim four point lead over Rick Wilson, and five point lead over Chris Jones in third, appeared to suffer slight damage to the steering arm on his #5 in the process. Both drivers were able to return to the action, but with a lot of ground to make up, as there were not yet any lapped machines.

The race restarted with one lap in the books and Dick Mahoney now the leader of the race, but with failing brakes, Mahoney was not able to hold off the advances of Adam West and Glenn Styres for long. Mahoney led the second lap before West slipped by for the lead, but Styres was hot on the heels of West’s #30 and got by the Batman after West had led the third lap. Using the low groove, West attempted to retake the lead as he and Styres raced side by side in the corners, but Styres’ momentum on the high side carried him back into the lead on the straights. With 25 cars starting the feature race, lapped traffic quickly became a factor. With lapped cars running both low and high around the Speedway, Styres and West turned their attentions to getting by the slower traffic. Styres was able to use the traffic to his advantage, opening a gap on West and the rest of the field. Meanwhile the #69 of Rob Pietz and #36 of Mike Stelter were marching through the field after starting ninth and tenth, respectively. Pietz had West in his sights, but as the two raced through lapped traffic, Pietz was not able to get by.

A caution flag slowed the field with sixteen laps in the books as Jeff Daniels came to a stop in turn four. The race restarted only briefly before it was slowed again, this time for a red flag as Daniels car appeared to suffer a mechanical problem, making contact with the frontstretch wall and flipping. Daniels emerged from the crash unscathed, but the #20 suffered extensive front end damage. When the race restarted for a four lap dash to the finish, Styres had four lapped machines between himself and second place West, including Dempster, who was not able to maintain the same pace he had shown earlier in the evening when he won the second heat race. when the green flag came out, Styres again opened up his lead while West worked to find a way around the lapped cars, and Stelter worked his way by Pietz for third, while ninteenth starting Dave Dykstra made his way into the top six.

With the end of the race in sight, Jason Pietz spun to a stop to bring out a caution flag, creating a two-lap dash to the finish. With lapped machines still between he and West, Styres was not seriously challenged on the restart and took the victory, followed by West, Stelter, Pietz, and Chris Jones. Dykstra, Jim Porter, Warren Mahoney, eighteenth starter Ryan Hunsinger, and twentieth starter Tim Zack rounded out the top ten.

Warren Mahoney, of RBM Carriers had an exciting race on Saturday at Brighton, Ontario for the 3rd round in the Southern Ontario Sprints. He gave the spectators a good show throughout the race and took the checkered flag in third. Here’s the full report from the official SOS website. See you in round four at South Buxton Raceway, June 28th!!

Styres Wins SOS Round 3 at Brighton

by Tommy Goudge, June 14, 2008

It had been over 2 full seasons since Glenn Styres visited victory lane in Southern Ontario Sprints competition, and the Ohsweken, Ontario resident made sure that streak didn’t go any longer by winning Round #3 of the 2008 SOS season at Brighton Speedway. Styres, who is co-owner/promoter of the Ohsweken Speedway, last won an SOS feature at Brighton on May 6, 2006, and earlier this season ended his overall winless drought in weekly competition at Ohsweken.

Bob Crawford and Warren Mahoney led the field to the green flag to start the 20 lap feature, with Crawford taking the early lead. Styres quickly made his presence known, however, and made his way from the 5th starting spot into the lead after just 5 laps. Shortly after Styres took the lead, the race was slowed by the yellow flag as the 14 of Bill Baldwin came to a stop in turn 3 and retired for the night.

Styres reasserted his lead on the restart and was never seriously challenged as the race went green the rest of the way, but behind him the race for 2nd was fast and furious. Mahoney passed Crawford for the position, but a hard charging Rick Wilson had made his way to the top 5 after starting 8th. Wilson and Mahoney staged an entertaining duel for the 2nd position during the last few laps of the race, with Wilson eventually prevailing, leaving Mahoney to settle for 3rd, followed by Keith Dempster, and Crawford.

Chris Jones entered the night as the points leader and came home with a 6th place finish after starting 9th. Ryan Hunsinger, who made his first ever sprint car start at Brighton in 2001, came home 7th, followed by Adam West, Dick Mahoney, and Derek Jonathon.

Dempster entered the night just 7 points behind Jones, and unofficially emerged with the points lead, with Wilson also moving in front of Jones. The top 3 of Dempster, Wilson, and Jones are seperated by just 5 points as the SOS tour heads into its first doubleheader weekend of the season June 28 at South Buxton Raceway and June 29 at Humberstone Speedway.

WILSON JETS TO VICTORY LANE AT BRIGHTON SOS OPENER

By Tommy Goudge

(May 10, 2008) – A familiar face graced Brighton Speedway’s victory lane on Saturday night when Joyceville, Ontario’s Rick Wilson won the opening event for the Southern Ontario Sprints 2008 season. It was Wilson’s 3rd opening night victory at Brighton and his 12th career SOS feature win all time at the speedway, a traditional stop on the SOS tour.

John Burbridge, Sr. and Jeff Daniels brought the field down for the green flag with Burbridge taking command going into turn 1, but his lead would be short-lived. “The Joyceville” Jet lined up on the outside of the 3rd row at the start of the 20 lap A Feature and quickly moved through the field, advancing to 3rd before the completion of the first lap. Wilson then quickly got by the #20 of Daniels and moved around Burbridge, Sr.’s #21j during lap 3 to take a lead he would never relinquish. Wilson’s victory was not uncontested however, as Glenn Styres had advanced quickly from his 5th starting position. “The Ohsweken Flyer” closed in on Wilson’s Focus Eye Centres #42w after a brief battle with Burbridge, Sr., which set up an entertaining duel during the second half of the 20 lap feature.

Styres’ pursuit of victory came to an abrupt halt in corner 2 on the last lap as Bob Crawford, Craig Downie, and Mike Ferrell got tangled up. Styres was collected in the melee, which brought out the red flag for the only stoppage during the feature event. Styres was able to be pushed off again, but his Ohsweken Speedway #0 machine was no longer in contention for the win. All the drivers involved were unhurt in the incident.

The race went back to green for a two lap dash to the finish, but nobody was able to challenge Wilson, who took the checkered flag followed by John Burbridge, Sr., Kevin Job, Chris Jones, and Adam West. Burbridge’s and Jones’ finishes were career bests for the two up and coming drivers who made their first SOS starts in 2007.

NOTES:

- It was also opening night for Brighton Speedway after last weekend’s scheduled opening event was cancelled due to inclement weather, and a slightly rough track greeted the 17 SOS teams who made the trip. Track owner/promoter Mark Rinaldi and his crew went to work prior to the SOS Dash for Cash and a smooth and fast surface greeted the drivers when it was time to contest the feature.

- It was a night of ups and downs for the Wilson team. During preliminary action, Rick’s daughter April went for a wild ride at the beginning of the first heat race. After clipping one of the tractor tires which seperate the infield from the track surface in turns 1 and 2, April went for a series of flips and rolls, landing very hard on the tail section of the #15aw. Keith Dempster, Craig Downie, and Bob Crawford also sustained damage in the incident, but were able to make repairs and start the feature. Wilson, who took home her first sprint car victory in heat race action at Brighton last season, emerged from her machine under her own power but made a trip to the hospital for precautionary reasons and was later released.

- Opening night gremlins plagued a few teams on Saturday night, most notably front row starter Jeff Daniels and 3rd place starter Warren Mahoney, who both took their cars to the pits early in the feature. Daniels took home his first ever victory in a sprint car earlier in the evening as he guided his sharp looking #20 to victory in the second heat race. Bill Baldwin was on hand but was scratched due to fuel pump problems with his #14.

- Kim Stuckless was the lucky winner of the Have Bus Will Travel trip for 2 to Ohsweken Speedway’s World of Outlaws Sprint series events coming up in July. 2 more packages will be given away at the upcoming SOS events at Brockville Ontario Speedway on May 31, and Brighton Speedway on June 14.

- During breaks in the action, SOS tour announcer Greg Calnan was able to keep the local fans informed of the score of the Belleville Bulls/Kitchener Rangers game going on at the nearby Yardmen Arena. The Bulls won 6-3, forcing game 7 Monday night in Kitchener, much to the delight of the local fans, who were also happy to see local favourite Wilson in victory lane.
2008 SOS Driver Preview: Warren & Dick Mahoney “A Family Affair”

By Tommy Goudge – SouthernOntarioSprints.com

Baseball legend Satchel Paige supposedly once said that “age is a question of mind over matter; If you don’t mind, it don’t matter.” With his 60th birthday in the rear view mirror, Dick Mahoney certainly doesn’t seem to mind. The Newmarket, Ontario resident has won a Southern Ontario Sprints feature event in each of the last two seasons, and shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. Meanwhile, Dick’s son Warren finished 2nd in SOS points last season after winning his second tour championship in 2006. 2008 will be Dick’s 11th season of competition in the Southern Ontario Sprints, while Warren begins his 10th season with the club. Both had lengthy and successful careers with the Can-Am TQ Midget club before moving to the sprint car division, where they have both been perennial contenders ever since.

Amazingly, after winning 9 features in his first 5 seasons, victory lane has eluded Warren since his win at Merrittville on August 16, 2003. The Lefroy, Ontario resident has always been a front-runner with the SOS however, finishing no worse than 5th in points in any of his 9 seasons on the tour. Warren, who won the SOS championship in 2001 and 2006, and finished 2nd in 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2007, is taking aim this season at becoming the first driver in SOS history to win 3 championships.

Meanwhile, Dick will be piloting a brand new Maxim chassis on the SOS tour this season, and is also excited to compete in a wingless event with the Michigan Traditional Sprint series at South Buxton in July. After a career best finish of 3rd in the SOS points standings in 2005, Dick was unhappy with his results in 2006 and 2007, despite the two feature wins, which came at South Buxton and Brighton. Dick hopes the new car will help him to be up front on a more consistent basis this season, as his old car – now relegated to backup status – had become unresponsive to setup changes, which resulted in an “evil” handling #79 on many nights.

During the offseason, Dick and wife Helen spent time in Florida, where Dick recently took up golf, while Warren’s job and 3 young daughters kept him very busy here in Ontario. Racing season, however, is never really over for Dick and Helen as they made annual visits to the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals and East Bay Raceway Park’s Winternationals event over the winter as well. Dick also serves as Vice President of the Southern Ontario Sprints, a role which also occupies his time in the offseason as he helps to organize and schedule events for the club.

The Mahoneys form one of the more formidable teams in the SOS and they have a lot of support from sponsors such as RBM Carriers, Clintar Groundskeeping Services, Black’s Transport LTD, JTS Transportation, Fairway Transport, MP Engines, Wiseco Pistons, Beaberbuilt, Ultrashield, Kenetic Photo, Colin Still Attorney at Law, Simpson Racing, Pennzoil, Fram, Aesthetic Finishers, and www.ImageFactor.ca keeps websites up to date with the latest news and information for both drivers.
