The Globe and Mail yesterday along with all national newspapers published a story regarding Dalton McGuinty’s promise of green energy “explosion”. After reading this article, you will of course be for or against the proposal of “green power” . We will though in the future see more and more wind power units throughout our province.

globeandmail.com: Will green energy ‘explosion’ clear way for new jobs?.

If you are in the trucking industry, you are well aware of the crazy amount of paperwork that is associated with each shipment. It does not matter if it is a tiny box or a piece that needs all the room of a 53foot flatbed, the paperwork is the same. Sometimes the dispatcher is the sole person making sure that all the paperwork is correct on top of making sure the trucks are full, drivers are happy and deliveries are being made when promised. Sometimes, it is a thankless job. Then there is the US/Canada border crossing stickers that must accompany every shipment. CBSA has now alerted all that this sticker must be adhered to either the bill of lading or the customs invoice …….. not one of the other multiple pieces of paper that come with each shipment. You have been warned!!

Courtesy of Today’s Trucking

CBSA warns carriers against improper PARS procedures

Canada Border Services Agency is reminding carriers and brokers to notify drivers and dispatch that the PARS barcode must be affixed to the Customs Invoice and/or Bill of Lading.

The PARS barcode is not to be placed on a coversheet, says CBSA. The truck may be refused entry to Canada the proper procedures are not followed.

The agency says a recent trend has developed in which PARS are being presented upon arrival at the border on lead sheets with no shipment information other than the PARS bar code.

Having the code on the invoice or bill of lading allows border officers to review the information and verify it is the same shipment for which a release recommendation was made.

Lead sheets, says CBSA, are used only when submitting PARS release requests in advance of the arrival of the goods, as well as for multiple shipments carried by approved LTL carriers which benefit from Post Audit or CSA privileges.

Not sure about everyone out there but sometimes you must wonder where certain words originate. The word “truck” apparently has many meanings. For the most part the picture that forms is a large vehicle that can haul/transport various items from oranges to steel.

The definition from Wikipedia:

A truck is a vehicle for carrying goods and materials. The word “truck” possibly derives ultimately from the Greek “trochos”, meaning “wheel.” In North America, the big wheels of wagons were called trucks. When the gasoline-engine driven trucks came into fashion, these were called “motor trucks.” Lorry is a term from the United Kingdom and Ireland, but is only used for the medium and heavy types, i.e. a van, a pickup or a Jeep would never be regarded as a “lorry.”

Here’s some interesting definitions from The Free Dictionary:

Noun:

1. Any of various heavy motor vehicles designed for carrying or pulling loads.

2. A hand truck.

3. A wheeled platform, sometimes equipped with a motor, for conveying loads in a warehouse or freight yard.

4. One of the swiveling frames of wheels under each end of a railroad car or trolley car.

5. A set of bookshelves mounted on four wheels or casters, used in libraries.

6. Nautical A small piece of wood placed at the top of a mast or flagpole, usually having holes through which halyards can be passed.

7. Chiefly British A railroad freight car without a top.

OR:

1. History the payment of wages in goods rather than in money

2. have no truck with to refuse to be involved with: the opposition will have no truck with

the planned cut in pensions [Old French troquer (unattested) to barter].

Now here is where it gets strange! Also from Wikipedia

Troco (also called trucks and lawn billiards) is an English lawn game played with balls, cues and rings that remained popular through the Early modern period to the early 20th century. It is a forerunner of croquet and perhaps of cue sports such as billiards.

The oldest name in English seems to be “trucks” or “truck” from the Italian trucco and Spanish troco meaning billiards. Troco was popular as a country house pastime in the 19th century. Under the name “lawn billiards”, it appears as an alternative to croquet in a number of books of games and pastimes of the period. Troco was also played at pubs with large lawns, but apparently died out by the time of World War II.

We could continue to expand but I am sure you get the point. The English language is one of the most evolved and difficult languages in the world – and we have only just described one simple word that we in the transportation industry use multiple times during any given day.

If you live in Detroit or Windsor, you are well aware of all the pro & cons of the new crossing from reports in your local newspapers. But for people living outside the area, information is not so frequently reported. The transportation/trucking industry need to know up-to-date information on all border crossings to ease an already difficult job of driving on our busy lanes. When hauling as we do at RBM Carriers on flatbeds and step decks, choosing the right border crossing is an important decision made daily. So being well informed of congestion and the smoothness of the crossing is needed.

Here’s the latest report courtesy of Today’s Trucking: Your views and comments are welcome.

New border crossing would starve other links: Report

A publicly supported second span in the Windsor Detroit Gateway would divert traffic from existing regional crossings, hurting them financially, predicts the president of the Ambassador Bridge.

According to the Windsor Star, Dan Stamper says that the future existence of the Blue Water Bridge in Sarnia, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and his Ambassador Bridge might even be at risk.

If the new crossing hurts the Ambassador’s bottom line, it will seek compensation, he promised.

To make his point, Stamper points to a soon-to-be released U.S. Environmental Impact Statement by the Detroit River International Border Crossing group (DRIC), which is made up of Ontario and Michigan officials studying where to place the next border crossing.

Stamper says that the DRIC predicts an initial loss of traffic for the other crossings.

Truck ferry owner Gregg Ward isn’t worried about
a new bridge taking some of his business.

Blue Water, according to the report, would see a seven percent drop in cars and 16 to 18 percent drop in truck traffic in peak travel periods if and when the new bridge opens. The Ambassador Bridge would see a 30 to 39 per cent drop in cars and 54 to 75 percent drop in truck traffic, depending on the location of the new bridge.

“Do they want to bankrupt the other three crossings just to say they built a new one?” Stamper says.

But officials from the Blue Water and tunnel don’t seem to agree, suggesting that all three crossings have their own niche markets.
Detroit-Windsor Truck Ferry operator Gregg Ward admits that if the new bridge is permitted to handle hazmat trucks, it might hurt his business. However, he tells the Star that it’s unlikely that’ll happen.

“We will be in business as long as we are needed,” he says. “I think I know our place in the grander picture of international transportation. We are a niche service.”
